A man dead from a gunshot wound was found in the passenger seat.

A man laid up in a Melbourne hospital will be questioned by police about how the body of a man with an apparent fatal gunshot wound came to be in his car.

Police have not identified the victim, whose body was found in the front passenger seat of a Nissan Pulsar that crashed into the back of a concrete mixer in east suburban Croydon on Tuesday morning.

The car's driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police are waiting to interview him over the grisly find.

The truck driver was unhurt.

Police believe the victim was shot somewhere else.

"We don't believe the actual shooting incident was connected to the accident at the intersection," Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said.

"We believe the gunshot was sustained somewhere other than this location."

An autopsy is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Police are trying to piece together the car's movements before the collision.

They ask anyone who saw a beige Nissan Pulsar with registration ROP-683 between Monday and Tuesday to contact them.
