Man dead in Melb waters may have fallen

A man whose body was found floating near Melbourne's Station Pier could have fallen into the water, police say.

Investigators are working to identify the man, who was spotted by a passer-by in Port Melbourne early on Thursday.

Detective Senior Constable Adam Burnett has speculated the man might have tripped and fallen into the water.

"At this stage we'll just have a routine investigation, forensic testing, and we'll work out what happens from there," he said.

An autopsy will be conducted later on Thursday.
