A man charged over the hit and run of a police officer has appeared in a Melbourne court where his lawyer has asked he be seen by a mental health nurse.

The senior constable was hit by a car on Wednesday after officers motioned to the driver to pull over.

Tyson Jake Manitta was arrested on Saturday and faces charges including conduct endangering life, recklessly cause injury, intentionally cause injury, speeding, theft, fail to stop and possess drug of dependence.

The 30-year-old from Wantirna appeared briefly at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday where his lawyer asked for him to be seen by a mental health nurse and said he may apply for bail in the future.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again on December 11.

Police were taking part in an operation outside the Eastlink tunnel on Wednesday afternoon when they noticed a Ford Falcon with stolen number plates.

The sedan stopped as directed before it drove straight into the officer, who fired at the car.
