A man accused of murder after a fatal fight in Melbourne has recovered from his injuries to face court.

Trung Dong Nguyen, 47, of Carlton, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday charged over the July incident.

After the fight in the corridor of a Carlton unit block on July 21 another man, also aged 47, died in hospital.

Nguyen's lawyer, Michael De Young, said his client was only recently released from hospital.

"He himself was wounded in the incident, your honour, and he's been in hospital since July," Mr De Young told the Melbourne Magistrates court.

"He has recovered from some rather severe wounds."

Magistrate Duncan Reynolds said the murder charge meant Nguyen could not apply for bail until the case reached a higher court.

Nguyen was remanded to appear at a committal mention hearing on December 18.
