A man has been left with serious facial injuries after a brawl between two groups erupted in Melbourne's southeast overnight.

A large number of people were reported brawling outside a licensed venue in Foster Street at Dandenong about 3.30am on Sunday with public order officers and the dog squad called to the scene.

Officers had to use pepper spray after the crowd became aggressive towards police.

"We don't have an exact number on how many people were involved but there were about 100 people inside the licensed venue around the time it closed," Detective Constable Alexandra Kapetanovski said.

The fight broke out between two groups and a male was assaulted as he left the venue at closing time, she said.

"It was a physical assault and the man remains in hospital as a result of his injuries," Det Const Kapetanovski said.

The 28-year-old Cranbourne suffered serious facial injuries.

Another 28-year-old man, also for Cranbourne, was arrested for being drunk in public.

The detective urged anyone who may have witnessed or may have mobile phone or dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
