A learner driver has faced court over a hit-run crash that left a Melbourne toddler with serious injuries.

Zachery Davin Larkins, 21, is charged with failing to stop and render assistance during a vehicle accident where someone was injured and being an unaccompanied learner driver.

Outside court Larkins' lawyer Glenn Thexton said his client was remorseful for what happened at Laverton on September 9.

"He was in a state of shock at the time," he said.

"That's an explanation for his offending and he's sympathetic to the family."

Mr Thexton said Larkins would plead guilty to the offences.

He was ordered to reappear at Melbourne Magistrates Court in December.
