A hapless kayaker has called the police rescue chopper after he became stuck in mud south-west of Melbourne.

The duck hunter started to paddle at Lake Connewarre on the Bellarine Peninsula when he came across a muddy patch during low tide about 1pm.

The kayaker was winched to safety after he found himself stuck in the mud at Lake Connewarre on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The rescue helicopter then winched the man to safety and dropped him off at his car.

The man did not require any medical attention.

Authorities have told people to check the conditions and their equipment.
