Inmates attack prison officers at Barwon maximum security jail

A Victorian maximum security prison is in lockdown after four prison officers were seriously assaulted by inmates.

Three of the officers from Barwon Prison were taken to hospital for treatment on yesterday afternoon, but the extent of their injuries is not clear.

"Corrections Victoria can confirm that a serious assault on four prison officers occurred around 4 this afternoon at Barwon Prison," Corrections spokesperson Kim Healey told AAP last night.

Police were called to the prison and are investigating cause of the violence.
