Former AFL coach wants Vic fed seat

Former Fremantle AFL coach Damian Drum wants National preselection for the federal seat of Murray.

The Victorian upper house MP has spent 14 years in parliament but will seek preselection to win the regional seat at the upcoming election.

"Communities across Murray deserve a choice at the next election and the Nationals are the only party 100 per cent focused on making life better for people in rural and regional areas," Mr Drum said in a statement on Tuesday night.

"I have served in the Victorian parliament for 14 years, including time as minister and now the shadow minister for regional development, and I have a proven track record of standing up and delivering results for the people I represent."

Retiring Liberal MP Sharman Stone has held the regional seat since 1996, but before she won it it was held by National and Country Party members.

Mr Drum coached AFL side Fremantle from 1999 to 2001, entered Victorian parliament in 2002, and served almost two years as minister for sport and veterans affairs.
