Fire damages Melbourne weatherboard house

A man and his two dogs have escaped unhurt from a fire in a weatherboard house in Melbourne's west.

The house at Maidstone was well alight when fire crews arrived shortly after 8pm.

Fire crews confined the damage to the front of the house.

A mattress and bedding placed too close to a heater caused the blaze, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said.
