Experts urge Victorians to switch to all-electric homes

Victorians are being urged to go gas-free and save on their energy bills.

Tim Forcey, the home comfort and energy advisor behind Facebook group My Efficient Electric Home, says households can potentially save thousands of dollars, telling 9News heating is where you can see the biggest changes.

"You can heat your home more cheaply using the reverse cycle air conditioner," Forcey said.

He said it was much more cost efficient compared to ducted gas heating.

"Also happily, the capability of the air conditioners continues to improve," he said.

Installing a split system can cost as little as $600, depending on the model you choose.

Energy efficient heat pumps and solar hot water systems can also help you save.

"(Heat pumps) are basically just reverse cycle technology that extracts free renewable heat from the air and puts it in your water," Forcey said.

Government rebates of up to $1000 are available on eligible units.

On average, solar hot water systems can save households between $140-$400 per year on electricity bills.

He also suggests people switch their gas cook tops to electric induction.

"The induction cooktop is the modern way to go so you don't have any fire in the kitchen, it's safer, healthier," he said.

Investing in insulation and window double glazing can also help keep the home warm over the cooler months.
