Mount Buffalo National Park remains closed as search for accused gunman Dezi Freeman continues

A Victorian national park will remain closed over the long weekend as the search for accused gunman Dezi Freeman continues after more than four weeks.

The 56-year-old has been the subject of one of Australia's largest ever police operations after he allegedly shot two police officers and injured another at a home in Porepunkah in the state's alpine region on August 26.

A $1 million reward is on offer for information that leads to Freeman's arrest but the public has been warned not to search for the armed man.

Police have been patrolling Mount Buffalo National Park, a sprawling 31,000-hectare area located about 350 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

Ahead of the long weekend, a Parks Victoria spokesperson said the park would remain closed as police continued to patrol the area.

"We ask all visitors planning to visit the park to follow Victoria Police' advice regarding the park closure," ranger team leader Tomas Sanchez said in a statement.

"A road closure is currently in place, with Victoria Police regularly patrolling."

Residents and visitors were reminded to be vigilant around Porepunkah and surrounding areas, including the towns of Myrtleford and Bright.

According to government agency VicEmergency, a previous travel ban to Porepunkah has been lifted after extensive searches were carried out.

Victoria Police asked those in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers or triple zero.
