The timeline of events that led to cop-killer Dezi Freeman's death

After seven months on the run, cop-killer Dezi Freeman has been shot dead by tactical police in Victoria's north-east.

While Victoria Police are yet to formally confirm Freeman is the man killed by officers – although Commissioner Mike Bush said it is believed to be the fugitive – the shooting brings to an end a 216-day hunt.

Freeman disappeared into bushland after murdering two policemen – Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart, 35 – and seriously injuring one more in the alpine town of Porepunkah on August 26.

Officers from the sexual offences and child investigation team were executing a search warrant at his Rayner Track property when they were ambushed.

Freeman, a known sovereign citizen and survivalist with bush skills, had not been seen following the shooting and police said in February they "strongly" believed he was dead.

However, following a tip-off from the public, tactical officers surrounded a shipping container in the town of Walwa, on the NSW border, and shot Freeman dead after a three-hour-long stand-off.
