CFA Fiskville site clean-up delayed

The CFA has been given a three year extension to clean up its training facility at Fiskville which is contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals.

A parliamentary inquiry last year found firefighting bosses knew the training site was contaminated but still sent staff to train there.

The Environment Protection Authority ordered a clean up of the site, and on Friday extended the deadline of June 2017 to 2020 because the problem is "larger and more complicated than was anticipated."

Fiskville was shut in 2015 after a cancer cluster was discovered at the rural Victorian centre, where drums of toxic chemicals were burned and buried in firefighting training exercises over decades.

The CFA said it could not meet the original timelines due to the "high standards required by EPA for remediation", a spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.
