CHIEF FIRE OFFICER JOE BUFFONE'S FINAL DAYS AT THE CFA in VICTORIA:

June 17 - Becomes acting chief executive after chief executive Lucinda Nolan resigns and the CFA board is sacked over a controversial union pay deal.

June 27 - Stands down as acting chief executive after appointment of Frances Diver and returns to chief fire officer role.

June 28 - Tenders resignation.

June 29 - Discusses resignation with CFA chair Greg Smith, offers to withdraw resignation if given more power and pay, demands that CFA sign it by 5pm. The deal is not signed.

June 30 - Publicly announces resignation at 10am, two hours before Emergency Services Minister James Merlino releases emails detailing Mr Buffone's demands.

He later states on Twitter: "While there are some ongoing attempts to discredit me in the media today I unequivocally stand by my statement."
