Forensic investigators have scoured the bloody scene where a man was found with a reportedly slashed throat in the car park of a major Melbourne shopping centre.

The severely injured man was spotted by the Heavy Haulers fitness group, who were having a training session about 40 metres away.

They tried to help the man who was near the lift lobby of the Westfield Doncaster car park just after 6am on Friday.

"Unfortunately despite the attempts from our team and members, he was unable to be revived and passed away," the group say on their Facebook page.

Paramedics were called but the man had died by the time they arrived, police said.

The car park was closed on Friday while homicide squad and forensic investigators searched the scene.

Blood trails were being marked and photographed by police, photos showed.

A witness told 3AW that there was a lot of blood and it appeared the man had his throat slashed.

Police would only say the man sustained serious head injuries.

They are appealing for anyone that may have seen anything suspicious at the top level of the car par or in the lift lobby to come forward.

The man is yet to be identified, with the Heavy Haulers saying they did not know him.
