Another arrest over a Melb carjacking

A second teen has been arrested over a violent carjacking in Melbourne a week ago.

A 40-year-old was hospitalised after he was set upon by a gang of youths armed with a hammer when he got out of his car to inspect damage after his Mercedes was nudged from behind by a car in Malvern East on Tuesday last week.

Police say a 17-year-old who was arrested and released on summons on Wednesday is expected to be charged with theft of a car, intentionally causing injury and assault.

A 16-year-old was arrested on the day of the attack and charged with robbery and other assault-related offences.

That youth has faced a Children's Court and was bailed to appear at a later date.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Clair White said officers were escalating their response to the rise in aggravated burglaries and carjackings across the state.

She said four other teens had also been charged as part of a police crackdown on gang activity.

These teens, aged between 16 and 19, will face court at a later date charged with aggravated burglary, robbery and a theft in Melbourne's southeast.
