Accused Vic murderer remains in custody

A young man accused of murdering a Melbourne mother will remain behind bars as police analyse DNA and CCTV footage linked to the crime scene.

Sigaragh Baea, 21, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with the murder of Prasad Somawansa.

The 48-year-old woman was murdered in her Hoppers Crossing home on Thursday night, minutes after her son, an SES commander, left the house to help police.

Her body was found at 9.25pm by a family friend who had gone to check on her after her husband, a long haul truck driver, raised the alarm when he could not reach her on the phone.

Ms Somawansa had spoken to her husband, who had driven to Brisbane, on the phone about 8pm on the night she died.

He heard his wife being attacked, the Herald Sun newspaper reports.

The couple's 21-year-old son, Wishhasad Somawansa, had left the house after being called to help police following a brawl in nearby Wyndham Vale at 8.30pm.

Baea, from Lara near Geelong, was charged with Ms Somawansa's murder on Saturday.

He was remanded into custody and reappeared in court on Sunday.

The 21-year-old returned to court on Tuesday, where he was not required to speak and did not apply for bail.

An order was made for DNA evidence and CCTV footage, at the prosecution's request.

Baea has been remanded into custody and will return to court for a committal mention in June.
