$400k funding for Vic LGBTI seniors

Senior lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Victorians shouldn't have to get back in the closet as they get older, the state government says.

LGBTI seniors will soon benefit from a $400,000 program promoting health, wellbeing and social inclusion.

Minister for Equality, Martin Foley announced the funding would go to Vals Cafe on Saturday.

The Vals Cafe project is named in honour of a Melbourne coffee longer that became a gay-friendly meeting place in the early 1950s.

The project was established in 2009 to work with aged-care facilities and help providers understand the histories and experiences of their older LGBTI clients.

"LGBTI seniors shouldn't have to get back into the closet as they grow older," Mr Foley said.
