Vic town of Kilmore prepares for bushfire

Residents of a new housing estate near the Victorian town of Kilmore are nervously waiting as a bushfire heads their way.

With an emergency warning in place for the area, many have already evacuated but a few are waiting to see what happens with the fire.

Smoke is in the area and there is a gusty wind.

Monique Allport has lived in the Kingsgate Housing Estate for just six months and says she will protect her house as much as she can, but she may soon leave.

"If our house goes then ... our lives are more important than our houses at the moment," she told AAP on Monday.

"It is just coming from all directions at the moment.

"It is just too hard to say whether the houses are going to be safe.

"All we can do is keep out fingers crossed at this stage."

Ms Allport says she will do the safe thing and evacuate if things get out of hand.

"If push comes to shove and it starts to get really out of hand, then we'll be off."

She said the area was very dry.

"I'm very worried, I'm just trying to keep calm because panicking it is not going to help," Ms Allport said.

Her neighbour Stuart Gray said he was confident he would be okay with a garden hose.

"No point stressing too much," he said.

"Whatever happens, happens really."
