Queenslanders are being urged to check if they could be owed a piece of a $52 million pie, with a new campaign to send unclaimed rent bond money to its rightful home.

The state government's Residential Tenancies Agency said it was holding more than 114,000 rental bonds, averaging $454.99 apiece.

Just under half were over $300.

"While it's hard to imagine forgetting to claim a rental bond, ending a tenancy can be a busy time for all involved," RTA CEO Jennifer Smith said.

"Our oldest outstanding bond payment dates back to 1990, so if you've forgotten to claim your rental bond, regardless of how long it's been, this campaign is your reminder to check in with us."

The largest bond held by the RTA is $25,796.09.

Customers can now submit an online enquiry via the RTA website to check their records and reconnect with any forgotten bond monies.

Brisbane is the local government area with the most unclaimed bonds, at 39,991.

That's followed by the Gold Coast with 15,440, and Moreton Bay with 6330.

"In most cases, when a tenancy ends, the RTA will issue a bond refund to relevant parties to the bank account details provided," Smith said.

"Sometimes these refunds are not successful, due to missing or incorrect customer details."
