A woman who was mauled by two dogs as she tried to protect her Jack Russell along a popular walking track in Sydney's south has lost her pet to the injuries it suffered during the attack.

Eleanor Booth's beloved dog Indi passed away at the Sydney Animal Hospital on Monday afternoon after they were both attacked while walking by the Georges River in Lugarno on Sunday.

The incident ended with Booth and her pet being rescued by emergency services after the 34-year-old ran into neck-deep mud to escape two dogs who had broken free from their home.
