Countless Australians are entitled to a share in $2.3 billion in unclaimed money. Here's how to find out if you're one of them

Cash-strapped Australians could stand to pocket hundreds of dollars from a pool of $2.3 billion in unclaimed money, according to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

The cash comes from 'lost' bank accounts and life insurance policies that have gone untouched for more than seven years.

This unclaimed money then goes to ASIC and is transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia Consolidated Revenue Fund.

From there, ASIC can administer it to individuals with a rightful claim. There's no time limit on when the rightful owner can claim it.

The catch is that many Aussies have no idea if they have a rightful claim, or how to collect unclaimed cash they may be owed.

ASIC's Moneysmart website has a handy unclaimed money search that allows individuals to check if they have a claim to any lost money and then provides details on how to make a claim.

Individuals can also search state government websites for unclaimed money from deceased estates, lost share dividends, salaries and wages, and more.

New South Wales

Revenue NSW maintains an unclaimed money register for the state and offers a free online service for individuals to find and claim lost cash they may be entitled to.

Unclaimed cash is administered by the Queensland Public Trustee, which provides tips on how to search for and claim unclaimed money on its website.

Victoria's State Revenue Office runs the state's Unclaimed Money Register and has an online search tool to help individuals find lost cash.

The Public Trustee and Guardian for the Australian Capital Territory administers unclaimed money in the ACT and has a smart form used to search for unclaimed money on its website.
