Unwell two-year-old with COVID-19 back in Adelaide hotel quarantine with family

A two-year-old boy who in an Adelaide hospital after testing positive to coronavirus has returned to hotel quarantine with his family.

The toddler is a returned traveller who started to feel "very unwell" while isolating, South Australia's Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said today.

But SA Health has since said he is feeling better than initially thought and was able to leave hospital this afternoon.

The boy is now at Tom's Court Hotel in Adelaide with his family.

Professor Spurrier said so far the child's family had all returned negative tests.

"My thoughts are with this family today, it's not nice having a little one, only two, very unwell," she said.

Professor Spurrier said the given the age of the child, he would not have been wearing a mask on the flight he was on.

SA Health will do additional testing for anyone else on that flight including a day three test while the arrivals are in quarantine.

"We're just a little bit more anxious about that particular flight and as a result we will be implementing additional testing for anyone else who was on that flight, and they will be having a day three test as well," Professor Spurrier said.

The little boy was one of two people in the state currently in hospital with COVID-19.

The other is a man in his 60s who is at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a stable condition.

Repatriation flight due to touchdown in Adelaide

The Tom's Court Hotel is bracing for potentially more positive cases in the days ahead with a repatriation flight from India due to arrive in Adelaide at 1pm on Friday.

There will be 150 vulnerable Australians on board the flight.

The passengers will be taken to the Pullman Hotel, and then any positive cases from there will be taken to Tom's Court Hotel.

With concern around the flights from India, health authorities in South Australia have completely reviewed their processes.

Passengers will be subjected to daily saliva tests, the close contacts of any positive cases will be moved to a separate part of the Pullman Hotel away from the other guests, and hotel quarantine staff have all been retrained in the use of PPE to prevent another COVID-19 leak.

"We have some very vulnerable Australian citizens and at the national cabinet we decided that we would work together," South Australian Premier Stephen Marshall said.

"I absolutely guarantee that we've done everything we possibly can ahead of the flight, and then also when people arrive on that flight."

It is the first flight into South Australia from India since the nationwide pause last month.

There are still thousands of Australians stuck in India.

Anyone who gets a ticket for one of the repatriation flights must test negative before boarding.
