Two Sydney terror suspects ‘threatened’ police and prayer hall

NSW police and the Australian Federal Police alleged the two Sydney men arrested over suspected terrorist activity this week had made threats against police and a prayer hall.

It has also been confirmed no direct threat was made to a police facility or any particular officer.

Omar Al-Kutobi, 24, and Mohammad Kiad, 25, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with planning a terrorist act.

Investigators from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) said an alleged proposed threat aimed at the prayer hall was abandoned and officers have been sent overseas to continue their investigation.

Earlier today it emerged Al-Kutobi had once tried to join the Australian Army because he reportedly loved Australia so much.

His father Ahmad told Fairfax Media the application was rejected two years ago. Six months ago his son told him he was frustrated with the nation he called home.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has also received criticism from the legal fraternity, who believe the comments he made in Parliament yesterday could compromise the pair's right to a fair trial.

Mr Abbott detailed a previously-undisclosed recording in which the men reportedly talk about "stabbing the kidneys and striking the necks", describing it as "monstrous extremism".

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions said the prime minister's comments "will not have any impact".

The pair are expected to apply for bail on March 16.
