Two more Australians found safe in Nepal as fears grow for 36 still missing

Two more Australians have been found in Nepal as the federal government holds concerns for the remaining 36 people still missing more than a week after a fallen glacier is believed to have triggered deadly floods on the Tibet border.

The pair were previously uncontactable but have now confirmed that they are safe and do not require any consular assistance.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the ABC on Friday that the news would be a “huge relief” to their loved ones but warned there were “very serious concerns” for the others still unaccounted for.

“There are thousands of people still missing in Nepal and in Tibet. Good news that two Australians have been located overnight,” he said.

“We are concerned for the 36 who are still unaccounted-for.”

There are about 1280 people confirmed dead and 5620 more missing, including 840 foreign nationals as of September 3, according to the Nepali and Chinese authorities.

The federal government has provided $11 million to support the disaster efforts in Nepal and deployed 19 personnel to the region with another 23 to join them in the coming days.

The Australian Federal Police has also allocated specialist officers to the families of the Australians still missing in Nepal to provide support through the identification process.

In Nepal, mass burials continue, about 22,000 children are without safe drinking water and about 20,000 homes need to rebuilt.
