This dreary spot beat all of Australia's best beaches

As a land girt by sea, our beaches have made Australia one of the world's hottest travel destinations.

But when it comes to naming the top 25 beaches in the world, only one of our prime locations is worthy of cracking the list.

Travel website TripAdvisor has ranked the best beaches for 2018 with exotic locations in the Caribbean, Mexico, the Unites States and Spain taking out top honours.

But sitting at lowly number 16 is Manly Beach, beaten out by a beach in the dull and dreary United Kingdom.

Yes, Bournemouth Beach came in at 14 on the TripAdvisor list, ranked higher than any beach in Australia.

The top 25 was formulated by TripAdvisor users but the website does not specify how the list was compiled.

The result sparked outrage from Today co-host Karl Stefanovic, who said the result was a "joke".

Speaking to Olivia Mackinnon from Australian Traveller Magazine, Stefanovic said a number of Australia's great beaches didn't make the list.

"Manly has to be there because of sheer population," Ms Mackinnon said. "With so many travellers it is beautiful, is easily accessible and has a great reputation.

"There are 8000 beaches in Australia, and are mostly undiscovered."

Ms Mackinnon said there was one clear favourite in Australia among her readers.

"We did a survey at Australian Traveller Magazine and out of 4000 people, Whitehaven beach in Queensland was voted the best. It's beautiful from every angle."

Stefanovic nodded in agreement, before declaring why Whitehaven might have been skipped over.

"Maybe because Whitehaven doesn't have a Bavarian Bier Cafe, which is a fine way to spend a Saturday afternoon, let me tell you."
