Dad drowns saving two sons at NSW beach

A UK tourist has drowned while trying to rescue his two sons caught in a rip on the NSW South Coast.

The 46-year-old man was swimming with his family at Burrill Beach, just north of the entrance to Burrill Lake, about noon when the boys were swept out in the surf, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

He swam out to try and help the pair, only to find himself also caught in the rip.

Beachgoers went into the water and managed to drag the boys to shore.

But when they returned, they found the man floating face-down in the water.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and he was later declared dead on arrival at Milton Hospital.

Members of his family have been offered counselling.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The incident is the second drowning on the beach within weeks, following the December death of a Filipino national.
