Tony Abbott defiantly unenthusiastic during federal budget release

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott appeared less than impressed when parliament erupted in applause during the release of Scott Morrison inaugural budget last night.

Government MPs leapt to their feet as the treasurer concluded his first budget speech, which was heavily focused on "jobs and growth".

Mr Abbott, however, did not join in his party's jubilation and seemed steeped in ennui as he reluctantly rose from his backside to applaud from the backbench.

There has been growing anticipation as to how Mr Abbott will respond to the new federal budget after the former PM denounced several of Labor's policies mirrored in Mr Morrison's budget, including tobacco excise and superannuation tax concessions.

Tensions have remained high between Mr Abbott, Mr Morrison and Malcom Turnbull since the latter took over the top job.
