Toddler hit by bus in Newcastle's west

A toddler has been seriously injured after he was hit by a bus in Newcastle's west.

Emergency crews were called to Chatham Road in Hamilton North just after 8am today after reports a two-year-old boy had been hit.

The boy was treated for serious leg injuries at the scene before being rushed to John Hunter Hospital by paramedics.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Jim Duffy said it was a challenging job for paramedics and this is a reminder for drivers to be cautious when children are about.

"The leg injuries were severe - the patient remained conscious throughout," he said.

"This was a very challenging job to attend.

"I can't stress enough the danger that motor vehicles pose to children – and the need for constant vigilance around roads."
