Karl's basbysitter caught up in international tsunami threat

Tsunami waves have hit land in multiple countries overnight after one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded.

Warnings have since been downgraded, however Hawaii remains on edge.

Aussie travellers Skye Kelton and Jack Craig are currently on holiday in Honolulu and they told Today "The past 12 hours have been hectic".

"It was a bit scary - we were actually out getting some groceries when my phone just started beeping like crazy," Skye told Today.

"It said the first wave would hit at 7.10 and the sirens started going off as we got outside and they kept going off every hour, ten past the hour."

Skye, who babysits for Karl and his wife when she's back home, said she and Jack were looking to Honolulu locals on what they should do and a lot of people were desperate to get to higher ground.

But thankfully, the warnings have been downgraded and it looks like the threat has passed.

"We've been down to the beach this morning and everything seems back to normal," Jack said.

"The waves are a bit bigger than what they were yesterday and the water's a bit murkier, but we were fortunate enough to be up on higher ground."
