'Still get goosebumps': Swim champ remembers historic Sydney 2000 Games

It's been 25 years today since Sydney hosted the greatest Olympics in the Games' history.

From Cathy Freeman lighting the Olympic cauldron and taking home gold in the women's 400 metre finals, to Ian 'Thorpedo' Thorpe winning a humble three gold and two silver in the pool, aged 17, highlights from the Games are endless.

Fellow swimmer, Michael Klim, earned himself two gold and three silver at Sydney 2000, a Games he told Today still gives him goosebumps.

"It's hard to believe that 25 years has passed," Klim said.

"I can remember it all, it was something amazing and it ignited this special fire within the country, I think it presented one of the best Olympics ever."

When Klim hit the water at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre on September 16 of that year, for the Swimming Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay alongside Thorpe, Chris Fydler, Ashley Callus, Todd Pearson and Adam Pine, he said he had no idea the lasting legacy that race would hold.

"Twenty-five years on, it's still on the top of the list of many people who come up to me on the street and they tell me exactly where they were when they watched that event," he said.

"You can tell that a moment in time is significant when you remember where you were and it means so much to me because as an athlete, you don't go out there to change people's lives or to have an impact on a country like we have as an Olympic team.

"That whole 4x1 and 6x1 freestyle relay has had an amazing impact and I was fortunate enough to watch Cathy from the stands, so not only was I able to swim an event and win gold, but also witness one of our greatest Olympic moments ever as well."
