Optus customers are abandoning the company in the wake of the hacking scandal, now looking for a cheaper, and more secure, provider.

In a survey of 2000 people, Today technology expert Trevor Long found that 10 per cent of Optus customers had already left the provider while 50 per cent were considering leaving.

The data breach wasn't the only reason customers were turning away from the telco giant, with Long saying Optus' handling of complaints and general customer communication an issue for many.

But despite this, half of those surveyed had not changed their plans in five years or more, despite the same provider offering regular deals.

"That's worrying because we're talking about cost-of-living and if you were to find a telco like Vodafone or Telstra with a plan that was cheaper by $10 a month, you are going to have enough data to get you through the month but you're going to save $120 a year," he said.

"So people need to pick up the phone and find a better deal."

He said the survey showed people on average are getting 47GB of data a month but only using around 24GB.

"We think we need a lot more and the Telstra and Optus, Vodaphone plans are huge, hundreds in data but you don't need that," he said.

"If you look at Boost, Kogan or ALDI, there are some stunning deals, like $20-odd a month and cheaper - It is potentially a saving of half your mobile bill."
