Mark Bouris' stark warning after RBA puts rate hikes on hold

After 10 consecutive hikes putting pressure on struggling Aussie families, the Reserve Bank has paused interest rates at 3.6 per cent.

Borrowers anxiously wait to see if any more increases are on the cards from the big banks, but Mark Bouris said they should follow suit.

"If the banks follow any of the conventions they've followed for the last 30 or 40 years, they will not increase rates," the Yellow Brick Road founder told Today.

"That doesn't mean the cost of funds for banks haven't gone up in the marketplace, but the banks should not increase their interest rates as a result of the Reserve Bank going on pause."

But Bouris did warn that doesn't mean mortgage holders are going to see any relief in the immediate future.

"The interest rates are still at an all-time high for the last 13 years and variable rates are ridiculously high," he said.

"Fixed rates are coming off very quickly, and 1.2 million people are coming off their fixed rate to something like triple the repayments on a monthly basis so this pause doesn't really mean anything, to be frank with you.

"The question is, how long before we start to see rate reductions?"
