World's fattest cat chooses kitchen pantry to sleep in after being adopted

A cat that may be the world's chunkiest on record has settled into his new home after an online adoption plea saw the flabby feline go viral.

Patches weighed more than 19 kilograms when he was surrendered to the animal shelter by his previous owner in the US state of Virginia.

When Kay Ford's daughter saw a post looking for someone to adopt him, she knew her mother was the perfect choice.

"I was having my morning coffee and my daughter sent me a picture and I really truly fell in love with him at first sight," Kay told Today Extra.

She wrote to the shelter and an hour later they contacted her to come in for a meet and greet.

"I was nervous I might not be the one that was chosen, but very excited to meet him," she said.

"But I knew that whatever was meant to be was going to be."

Thankfully for Kay, she was the perfect match and has already managed to help Patches lose three kilograms under her care.

But while Patches is too fat to get up on the bed, his choice of sleeping quarters needs to be kept a close eye on.

"There is a little bit of irony in the fact that he has claimed the pantry in the kitchen as his safe space," Kay said.

And Kay's other fur babies, Bella - a Yorkshire terrier - and another, much smaller, two-year-old cat have welcomed Patches into the family too.

"Bella is really not fazed by him, but it took a little longer for my two-year-old kitty," she said.

"There was a little bit of hissing for the first two or three days, but now all of a sudden it was just like they have always been friends."
