Science week in schools may be over for another year, but that didn't stop Karl and Sarah from throwing on their lab coats.

The Today hosts were joined by Ranger Jamie and his team, Ranger Ellie and junior rangers, Whitney, Emersen and Eden, for some fun experiments.

From toilet paper leaf blowers to liquid nitrogen balloons, Karl and Sarah had their work cut out for them as Ranger Jamie's lab assistants.

However, there was one demonstration involving a balloon, water and a naked flame which did not go as planned for poor Karlos.

"Watch the hair, it's flammable," Karl nervously warned his guests as he sat in a chair with the lighter ignited just centimetres above his head.

Ranger Jamie assured Karl he was totally safe and the water inside the balloon would prevent the flame from burning through its rubber, which would remain a solid.

However, as the blue balloon rubber started to char and blacken, there was a sudden pop! And a large fountain of water cascaded onto Karl's hair and down his face and suit.

"I do apologise, that wasn't meant to happen," Ranger Jamie told a miffed-looking Karlos.

"But you looked amazing and you did such a wonderful job."

You would hate to be Karl having to march back up to Today's hair and makeup team to explain what happened to all their hard work for this morning's show.
