Karl Stefanovic showboats tennis victory in $1 million 1 Point Slam – and he didn't even touch the ball

Tennis fever has taken over the courts and our screens as Today host Karl Stefanovic celebrated a victory at the 2026 Australian Open on Wednesday.

Even he was surprised.

The host went head-to-head against Northern Territory state champion Thomas Van Haaren during a high-stakes round in the 1 Point Slam.

Karl won the first point, but only after his rival's double fault, and without even touching the ball.

Following his epic win, Karl had some cheeky advice for those who one day dream of playing on Rod Laver Arena, just like he did.

"It's been a long, hard slog to get here tonight," Karl said to the crowd.

"All those 'journey' people out there, it's worth it in the end. Just keep working hard, and you'll get there. International tennis!" he cheered.

Karl was a celebrity wildcard in the 1 Point Slam, a unique knockout tournament that saw one lucky winner walk away with a $1 million grand prize.

The Opening Week event featured a mix of tennis pros, local amateurs, fans and high-profile celebrities competing in a sudden-death format where every match was decided by a single point.

Karl lost to women's world No.52 Maria Sakkari in the second round.

Headlining the event were stars such as Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Nick Kyrgios, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff.

Karl joined Australian comedian Andy Lee and former cricket captain Steve Waugh among the high-profile guests who picked up a racquet on court.

He certainly enjoyed his time out on the court.
