Tech expert 'steals' Karl Stefanovic's identity

A fake Karl Stefanovic account has been set up on Twitter to prove a major flaw in Elon Musk's new verification policy.

A blue verification tick used to mean the social media account belonged to a "notable" identity in government, news, entertainment or another designated category.

But tech billionaire Musk has controversially changed it to a subscription service anyone can get if they pay a fee of AU$11 a month.

Today tech expert Trevor Long pointed out this makes it a lot easier for fakes to impersonate high-profile people.

"Blue ticks on Twitter may be impersonators and that will be a risk for ministers, governments and businesses," Long said.

To prove this, he "bought" a blue tick and created an account using Karl's details.

"Thanks for hacking me, it was enjoyable," Karl told Long.
