Music legend John Williamson sang his anthem True Blue in tribute to the Bondi Beach attack victims at the opening of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide yesterday.

But he told Today this morning that until he sung it, he wasn't sure it was the right song for the occasion.

"It was an absolute honour," he said.

"And it probably wasn't until yesterday that I was sure that True Blue was the song for the job, and the response proved it to me. So I feel very proud of that."

He said despite feeling honoured, it was obviously a "sad day", given the reason he was there.

"But let's hope the message, the message comes through, you know, that we are peaceful people and we all look after one another and there's just no hate in this country," he said.
