John Farnham in good spirits despite cancer diagnosis

Richard Wilkins has revealed Australian singing legend John Farnham has been diagnosed with cancer.

The Today entertainment editor confirmed the 'Two Strong Hearts" singer was in hospital this morning to have a malignant tumour removed.

As Australia wakes to the shock news, Wilkins assured that the 73-year-old is in good spirits considering.

"He is getting prepped as we speak," Wilkins told Ally and Karl.

"He is apparently cracking jokes with the doctors."

Just weeks after the deaths of The Seekers singer Judith Durham and Wilkins' close friend Olivia Newton-John, from cancer also, he said this morning's news is something no one wants to hear.

"Jill and the boys will be on tenterhooks this morning but they have a lot of love and support," Wilkins said.

Wilkins said surgeons are confident they can get it all and the operation will be successful.
