Crowds are already building at fish markets around the country this morning, with traders predicted to sell millions in seafood this Easter long weekend.

Whether it's prawns, oysters, calamari or barramundi, enjoying a seafood lunch, dinner and even breakfast, is a tradition families around the world embrace - particularly on Good Friday.

But while state governments are encouraging Aussies to enjoy fresh, local seafood this Easter - one Today reporter has made a controversial call on the traditional holiday fare.

Sarah Stewart was reporting from the already busy Sydney Fish Markets this morning, where fishmongers are expected to sell an incredible 650 tonnes of seafood over the next four days.

But while she spent the morning surrounded by every type of fish, shellfish and mollusc you could possible name, she admitted there is one item she disagrees with being on the dinner plate... no matter what day of the year it is.

"I'm going to be controversial here guys and say for me, oysters, they are not food," she said.

"Give me fresh prawns any day, but oysters - they are just a slimy mess."

Sarah's co-hosts Clint Stanaway and Jayne Azzopardi disagreed, saying they'd love a seafood dish for breakfast.

"I'd have oysters for breakfast, bring them to the studio," Jayne said.

"Yeah and I could do a lobster roll too," Clint added.
