Gold Coast couple dodge death on busy road

A Gold Coast couple are thanking their lucky stars after a metal rod came crashing through the windscreen of their car at high speed.
Adam’s partner was driving up the busy M1 motorway at a speed of 100km/h when the large iron object hurled through the glass, narrowly missing Adam, who was in the front passenger seat.
Adam Birkby and his partner dodged death when an iron rod pierced their car windscreen. Today
“It came out of absolutely nowhere,” Adam told Today.
“I was actually on the phone at the time and my partner was driving… then suddenly, we heard a massive bang, glass shattered all over us and we realised there was a metal rod sticking out the windscreen of our car.”
Adam recalls seeing something dropping from above out the corner of his eye in the moments before the collision, but doesn’t know specifically where the rod came from.
“We had gone under an overpass, so we don’t know if that’s where it came from, or whether it was flicked up by a passing car or it’s come off a truck… we really don’t know, we’ve got no answers at this stage,” he said.
Adam praised his partner, who was distraught and in tears following the impact, however she managed to get the car across several lanes of passing cars to pull over somewhere safe.
“She did amazingly well to get the car over to the side of the road, considering the state she was in,” he said.
He has reported the incident to police and put the call-out on social media to see if he can get any witnesses to come forward with dashcam footage, but so far, he has come up empty-handed.
