An Aussie artist from regional NSW said she thought she was being scammed when one of the world's most famous supermodels slid into her DMs asking to commission a one of a kind piece.

Lottie Rae runs a small gallery from her home, west of Dubbo and told Today she was "just doom-scrolling on Instagram" when she noticed she had an unread message in her inbox.

And it was from none other than Victoria's Secret model, Gigi Hadid.

"I was sitting there and I looked at it and I thought 'oh my God! this can't be real,'" Lottie told Today.

"You get all the weird spam stuff and I thought, 'this can't be the real Gigi, it can't be the real one', but then I saw her followers and I like yeeted my phone across the room like, what the hell?"

Once the reality set in - Lottie did what any other person would in that situation and opened the group chat with her friends to tell them the unbelievable news.

"Then I rang Mum and Dad and I was like, 'you're not going to believe who just slid into my DMs, Gigi Hadid' and I heard the awkward like, 'Who is that?', it was very underwhelming for them but yeah, it's so sick," she said.

Hadid, who has modelled for some of the biggest fashion house in the world, told Lottie she liked one of the paintings she saw on the young Aussie's social media page, but there was just one problem - that one had already been sold.

"It really tested my morals and ethics because it was still sitting in my lounge room, but I'd already sold it for a better price," she said.

"But I messaged the girl who had already bought it and I was like, 'just so you know, Gigi Hadid just tried to buy your piece,'" she said.

So Lottie painted a new original piece and revealed Hadid bought it for her sister, fellow supermodel Bella Hadid.

"It's cool because we live in the middle of nowhere, like we're six hours west of Sydney, so Gigi Hadid was never going to walk through my gallery door, but the fact that you can live anywhere now and do whatever you want, as long as you put it out there, people have a way to find it," she said.
