A Sydney council have admitted they don't know how a diamond-shaped roundabout, causing chaos among cars and trucks, got approved.

The intersection feature in Austral, in the city's southwest, has drivers attempting multiple-point turns to get around it, almost colliding with each other and just getting frustrated and driving over the top of it.

But while aerial vision captured by Today shows there is clearly room for a traditional circular roundabout in the space, Liverpool City councillor Peter Ristevski said he has asked for an investigation into why the diamond shape got green-lit.

"My inbox last night was bombarded with over 300 responses asking, 'what is going on? You guys can't even build a roundabout,'" Peter told Today.

"They've pretty much lost confidence in the council which is very concerning at the moment."

Peter admitted he didn't know how much the diamond roundabout cost to install, but blamed leaving the job in the hands of external contractors.

"It's a pretty good reflection of where things are at with council, but ratepayers are paying for it all and they're going to have to pay for this to be rectified because it's an absolute joke looking at it," Karl Stefanovic pointed out.

"It's quite embarrassing," Peter added. "I'm in Canberra for the Australian Local Government Conference, where I've had every single councillor here in Australia rip into me about this roundabout," he said.
