Amazon open new 'grab and go' high-tech convenience stores

Whether you do a full-blown grocery shop or just need to grab the milk and bread, Amazon has taken shopping convenience to a whole new level.

The tech giant has opened Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores in the US and UK and Today's Trevor Long had the opportunity to test out how it all works.

"They call it grab and go," Trevor told Today Extra.

"All you do is scan a QR code from the Amazon app on your phone, then grab what you need."

The store has no registers, self-serve checkouts or staff and use hundreds of sensors and cameras in the roof to detect every item you pick up from the shelf.

"As I walk in and scan my personal code, it knows it's me, it begins tracking me," Trevor said.

"Whatever I pick up, the camera sees - if you put things back, it doesn't charge you for them.

"You think about the normal shopping experience, whether you are buying chocolate or sandwich, you have to have a transaction - But here you walk in, grab it and go - There's actually no normality to it."

While Trevor's Australian Amazon app worked in the San Francisco branch, there aren't any current plans to open one of the stores Down Under.

But Trevor said Australia would be an ideal candidate for this concept.

"I think we're perfect for it, we're early adopters of technology, we love our gadgets and we have got convenience stores everywhere," he said.

"From everything I have read and seen it is amazingly accurate technology."
