Today in History - January 4 | Sixteen-year-old kills man in the street over a card game
US teenager John Wesley Hardin shot Benjamin Bradley dead on a Texas street on January 4 in 1870 after a card game dispute.
There were two accounts of the death at the time.
According to Hardin's account, the two men faced each other in a deserted street, where Bradley shot at the then-16-year-old but missed.
In retaliation, Hardin said he then killed Bradley with bullets to the head and chest.
But according to a news report, Hardin noticed money missing after the game and went out searching for another player.
He came across Bradley on the ground and shot him.
After the death, Hardin left town and never returned.
Hardin is believed to hold the gunslinger's record for killing the most men in the shortest period.
He is known to have murdered more than 20 men, including one for snoring loudly.
A riot broke out at Fremantle Prison in Western Australia on January 4 in 1988.
Prisoners planned the rampage to create a diversion to allow an escape to take place.
A fire was started and temperatures inside the cells were recorded at 52.2C, while five officers were taken hostage.
The fire caused $1.8 million in damage and inadvertently foiled the escape plan.
A glass ceiling was broken on January 4 in 1965.
