Third Victorian speed camera worker attacked in 10 days

A third traffic camera car operator in Victoria has been attacked in just 10 days as police work to crackdown on the "cowardly acts".

A traffic camera car was parked on Balcombe Road in Beaumaris in Melbourne's south-east about 9.55pm yesterday when a man smashed one of its windows.

The camera operator, who was in car at the time, drove away uninjured.

The incident occurred just one day after another traffic camera car had its windows smashed with a metal pole and tyres slashed while a worker was sitting inside.

Police spoke out yesterday to warn people the kind of "really cowardly attacks" were considered "high-end criminal behaviour", and were subject to specific police charges.

Victoria Police assistant commissioner Glenn Weir said the "really cowardly" attacks "caused real harm and distress to the camera operators" and were also "really, really harmful to the broader road safety program".

"We rely on the operators to do their jobs and keep Victorians safe," he said.

"I just don't understand why anyone is attacking someone who's just going about doing their job, trying to protect Victorians roads."
