Thieves attempt to blow up ATM using explosives in Gold Coast shopping centre
Two masked robbers are on the run after using homemade explosives to unsuccessfully blow up an ATM at a shopping centre in Gold Coast hinterland
Police said they were called to the Mudgeeraba Market Shopping Centre on Swan Lane around 12.45am after noises woke the complex caretaker.
An ATM producing smoke and what is believed to be a homemade explosive was located by officers at the scene.
They fled the centre by scaling the roof and climbing down a tree, police said.
The area surrounding the teller machine was placed on lock-down by the Explosive Ordinance Response Team (EORT), but was soon after deemed safe, police said.
Another device, a commercial firework, was found by Armourguard staff later in the day, causing an area of the centre to be temporarily cordoned off.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
