Boy, 7, killed by father in driveway ute 'tragedy' in NSW's Riverina region

A reversing ute that killed a seven-year-old boy in Temora, in the New South Wales Riverina region, was driven by the child's father.

Charlie Baldry was struck in his driveway at the family's home yesterday at 2.15pm.

Despite attempts by police and paramedics to revive him, Charlie died at the scene outside the property.

Police have confirmed the driver, aged 35, was the boy's father.

"At this stage police are treating this as a gut-wrenching, terrible tragedy that is extremely concerning for all involved including family and first responders," Inspector Robert Vergano told reporters.

"Investigations indicate at this stage the vehicle was reversing along a very tight driveway and it appears the seven-year-old has run behind the vehicle... and sustained some fatal injuries."

Despite the mandatory testing, police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.

Insp. Vergano said the full circumstances around the boy's death were not yet known.

"Quite understandably the family are extremely shaken, and we ask that their privacy be respected at this tragic time for the family, but also the entire Temora community, who are not travelling too well," he said.

Insp. Vergano urged people to remain vigilant when reversing their vehicles.

"Due diligence is taken in all cases you would assume, but you can never be too careful when reversing vehicles in driveways or when out on the street when there are young people around," he said.

Temora Mayor Rick Firman said the community would band together to support Charlie's family.

"He had a special spark that we'll remember very much," Cr Firman said.

"We will step up and we will be there for this family, I can guarantee you that."
