Telstra mobile plans now certified carbon neutral

Telstra has today announced that their mobile plans are certified carbon neutral, ensuring a minimal impact on the environment from one of the most important aspects of modern life.

It's a seemingly strange thing, that your mobile plan could be good for the environment, but Telstra isn't the first here.

TPG/Vodafone's smaller sub-brand telco Felix was setup with this sole intention, but Telstra's announcement as Australia's largest mobile network represents a significant step forward for the sector.

Telstra's Chief Sustainability Officer Justine Rowe said the science behind the decision "is clear".

"Climate change is adversely impacting our environment, economy, communities and individuals, which is why we've been working hard to make our mobile plans 100 per cent carbon neutral, at no extra cost to customers," she said.

The telco said that everything from the production of the plastic Telstra SIM card in your phone through to the power that keeps the network and all the communications infrastructure working is now 100 per cent carbon offset, meaning the mobile plans Australians use on the Telstra network can be certified Carbon Neutral.

In addition, Telstra customers can use their Telstra Plus loyalty reward points to support local and global environmental initiatives to further create carbon offsets to better their own environmental impact overall.

These are seemingly small steps, but large in many ways, particularly when considering the size of Telstra as a network in Australia.
